The Sharknado film series is a franchise of films written by Thunder Levin, directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, and produced by David Michael Latt for Syfy channel. Ian Ziering and Tara Reid are the main recurring characters, Finley "Fin" Shepard, and April Wexler. While the first film's initial success was limited, it quickly gained 'instant cult-classic' status, and has so far spawned five sequels, each more 'over-the-top' than the last. After the first film became a pop-culture sensation, numerous celebrities from all walks of the entertainment industry began making cameo appearances in the sequels that followed, to such an extent that practically every character seen on screen is portrayed by someone who is recognizable from elsewhere in pop culture.
